Winter colours are here!
Winter colours
Winter time is a wonderful time to stand back and watch as your succulent collection takes on a whole new look.
From the beginning of autumn and through the winter months our succulents quite often change colour. Take for instance one of my favourites, Echeveria Big Red. A big and bold succulent with colours that can be outstanding. Ranging from green through the summer months to a bluish green and onto a deep red in winter. Bears some beautiful pinkish coloured flowers too which I often pick and keep inside for several weeks. Grows well in fuller sun or part shade.
Another good example is Crassula Capitella Campfire. This little beauty is bright green through the summer months and come winter it will go bright red to orange.
Graptopetalum Paraguayense is another prime example of succulents changing colour. I have had them go from grey to pink, and as seen in these pictures the pink can become quite striking if the plant gets stressed. The colours shown above are not common but it can happen. Will take morning through to full sun.
So when you buy a succulent don't worry if it looks a little bit different to the picture shown. It can be as simple as the time of year the plant was purchased, or what position the plant was in prior to purchasing. Succulents will quite often take on some really striking colours if they are stressed. Sometimes pictures are so highly filtered that the picture shown is not how the plant actually looks. I have had people send me pictures of the most beautiful coloured plants and wanting one exactly the same. More often than not the picture has been filtered so much that it is nothing like the actual succulent colour. Especially purple and pink ones. One thing for sure, winter time is my favourite season when it comes to succulents.
