Juicy Jelly Beans
These little beauties from the Sedum family are a must have in any garden. One of the easiest succulents to take care of, relatively pest free and they always look delightful. If you are new to succulents these plants are a great way to start. Very little care is required, as they rarely need re-potting, don’t require pruning and are easily propagated.
They love sunshine and will grow in morning to full sun. The more sun the more colour you will achieve. Do be aware that in extreme heat the little leaves will burn though. Like most succulents they like their soil to be well draining. Water when dry.
Sedum Rubrotinctum Aurora also known as Pink Jelly Bean or Pink stonecrop. The prettiest of the bunch, leaves can be shades of white, pale green to bright pink. Grows to approx. 15 cm tall. Sedum Rubrotinctum Jelly Bean plant is a favourite. The colours can be striking, pale to bright green through to dark red. Especially if the plant gets enough sunshine. Like most succulents the colours in winter are beautiful.
Sedum Pachyphyllum silver jelly bean also known as Sedum Pachyphyllum rose. Colours on this one are more muted, pale bluish/green to pinkish/red tips. Grows to approx. 15 to 20 cm high. Lovely in the garden.
Sedum lucidium giant jelly bean is one of the larger varieties. Green plump glossy leaves form on stems, this one will grow to approx. 15 to 20 cm high. The leaf edges will turn red through the winter months and lovely clusters of white flowers form during spring.
These lovely plants are not frost tolerant though and take care where you plant them. They are mildly toxic to animals but I have never had a problem in the forty plus years I have been growing them. They are easily propagated, simply take cuttings and plant directly into potting medium. Or lay some leaves on top of soil and watch the tiny babies appear from a single leaf.
Other plants in the sedum family…
Sedum clavatum, also known as Tiscalatengo Gorge Sedum, is a captivating succulent that forms compact rosettes of plump, blue-green leaves with a powdery coating. These rosettes, typically reaching 2 inches in diameter, grow on creeping stems that can extend up to 8 inches in length, making it an excellent choice for hanging baskets or trailing over walls.
One of the most enchanting features of Sedum clavatum is its ability to change color in response to environmental stress. When exposed to ample sunlight or cooler temperatures, the leaf tips blush a beautiful pink or rosy hue, adding an extra layer of visual interest to the plant.
In the spring, Sedum clavatum produces clusters of small, star-shaped white flowers that age to a soft pink, providing a delightful contrast to the bluish-green foliage. This low-maintenance succulent thrives in well-draining soil and prefers full sun to partial shade. It is drought-tolerant and relatively easy to care for, making it an ideal choice for both novice and experienced gardeners.
Whether cascading from a hanging basket, sprawling as a ground cover, or gracing a rock garden, Sedum clavatum is sure to enchant with its unique texture, changing colors, and delicate blooms.
