What sort of potting mix should succulents be planted in?

I am often asked what sort of potting medium succulents should be planted in. Here is what I do, and it seems to work well for my conditions. I buy a good quality potting medium - Searles platinum 30 litre bags and add in perlite and diatomaceous earth granules. The potting medium needs to be well draining, and this is where the perlite helps. The diatomaceous earth granules help with drainage, but also has the added advantage of helping to keep ants at bay.

How much to add?

Add four cups of perlite to approx ¼ bag of potting mix. As I use 30 litre bags this would be about 7 and half litres of potting medium. Add 1 cup of dematiaceous earth granules and mix well. Please remember this is just a guide, I am not saying that it is correct, but I know it works for me. See the video showing how to mix…

Here’s how I mix my potting mix.

What about premixed bags?

There are different sorts of succulent mixes readily available. I am yet to find a good one as most of them seem to have too much bark in them. This is great for bromeliads but no good for succulents. It holds too much moisture, causing rot in the plants.
