Astrophytum - The Star Cactus

Astrophytum, commonly known as the Star Cactus or Sand Dollar Cactus, is a captivating genus of slow-growing cacti native to the arid regions of Mexico and Texas.Revered for their unique geometric shapes and often stunning white speckling, these cacti are a popular choice for collectors and succulent enthusiasts alike.

Appearance:

  • Shape: Astrophytums are typically globular or columnar in shape, with prominent ribs that divide the plant into distinct sections. The number of ribs can vary depending on the species, ranging from three to eight.

  • Color: The base color of the cactus is often a vibrant green, but it can also exhibit shades of gray, brown, or even reddish hues.

  • Speckling: Many Astrophytum species are adorned with white, woolly speckles or flakes that create intricate patterns on the surface of the cactus. These speckles are actually clusters of tiny hairs that help to protect the plant from harsh sunlight and reduce water loss.

  • Flowers: Astrophytums produce beautiful, large, daisy-like flowers that typically bloom in shades of yellow with red or orange centers. The flowers often appear in the summer months.

Growth Habits and Care:

  • Sunlight:

Astrophytums thrive in bright, indirect light or partial shade. They can tolerate some direct sunlight, but it's best to avoid intense afternoon sun, especially during the hottest months.

  • Soil: Requires well-draining soil, such as a cactus or succulent mix.

  • Watering: Water sparingly, allowing the soil to dry out completely between waterings.

  • Temperature: Prefers warm temperatures but can tolerate some cool temperatures if kept dry. Protect from frost.

Additional Information:

  • Astrophytums are relatively slow-growing cacti, taking several years to reach maturity.

  • They are often grafted onto other cacti to improve their growth rate and resilience.

  • Due to their slow growth and unique characteristics, they are highly sought after by collectors.

This Plant comes in a 130mm diameter container and the plant you see is the plant you get. The plant will be shipped bare rooted.
