Pachyphytum Compactum - “Little Jewel”, is a rare and interesting looking succulent with geometric, faceted leaves looking like small jewels. The commonly grown form is this small, rather succulent plant that is characterized by its closely set and thick blue-green to grayish leaves, which may shade hues of pink or purple when grown under bright light. The outer lamina surface is usually coated with a granular substance known as the epicuticular wax which blanches the plant and offers it a frosted silvery look, probably as a sun shield.

Growing natively in the rocky areas of Mexico, Pachyphytum Compactum is an easy-to-grow succulent plant that would be ideal for the novice as well as the master gardener. It reaches a height of up to 10 cm (4 inches); therefore, it best suits containers, rock gardens, and succulent gardens. Another ornamental plant is Pachyphytum Compactum; It has long flowers producing bell-shaped flowers in shade of red or orange when it blooms.

Appearance:

  • Leaves: Thick, fleshy, and egg-shaped leaves arranged in a tight rosette. The leaves boast a beautiful powdery, pale-green to bluish-gray hue, often tinged with pink or purple at the tips, especially when exposed to ample sunlight or cool temperatures.

  • Size: This Pachyphytum remains relatively small, typically growing to about 2-4 inches in diameter, making it ideal for containers, fairy gardens, or mixed succulent arrangements.

Growth Habits and Care:

  • Sunlight: Thrives in bright, indirect light or gentle morning sun. Avoid intense afternoon sun, which can scorch the delicate leaves.

  • Soil: Requires well-draining soil, such as a cactus or succulent mix, to prevent root rot.

  • Watering: Water thoroughly when the soil is dry, allowing it to dry out completely between waterings. Reduce watering in winter.

  • Temperature: Prefers warm temperatures but can tolerate cool temperatures if kept dry.

  • Maintenance: Minimal maintenance required.

Additional Information:

  • Pachyphytum compactum is a slow-growing succulent, making it a great choice for those seeking a low-maintenance plant.
