Rhipsalis cassutha or Mistletoe Cactus, is another handsome and rather striking epiphytic cactus native to the tropical rainforests of South America. Contrary to most cactus species, Rhipsalis cassutha grows in damp climate and is characterized by very flexible, long, slender stems that create a dense curtain-like effect; therefore, it is well-suited to hanging containers or pots. This easy-to-grow variety of plant is used both for decoration purpose and for home ornamentation by people because it germinates and grows in any condition of a home.

Rhipsalis cassutha are epiphytes that need bright, indirect sun and should be watered only when the roots feel dry. It is a kind of non-spiny cactus and therefore safe for your homes especially if you have pets or children. Oehmea grows from slender, pencil like stems, which may reach up to 1 metre in length, which gives them a graceful, cascading appearance. Small white or pale yellow flowers and later – small round fruits only increase the charm of this quite attractive species.

Appearance:

  • Stems: Slender, cylindrical, and segmented stems that cascade gracefully, creating a lush, trailing appearance. The stems are typically green but can turn reddish when exposed to bright light.

  • Leaves: Lacking true leaves, the stems perform photosynthesis.

  • Flowers: Small, white or pale yellow flowers that bloom along the stems in the spring and summer.

Growing Conditions:

  • Light: Prefers bright, indirect light but can tolerate some shade. Avoid direct sunlight, as it can scorch the stems.

  • Soil: Well-draining, airy soil mix formulated for epiphytes, such as a combination of peat moss, perlite, and bark chips.

  • Water: Water regularly during the growing season, allowing the soil to dry out slightly between waterings. Reduce watering in winter.

Care Tips:

  • Humidity: Prefers high humidity levels. Misting or using a humidifier can help create a suitable environment.

  • Fertilizer: Feed with a balanced, water-soluble fertilizer during the growing season.

  • Support: Provide a trellis or moss pole for the stems to climb on or grow in a hanging basket.
